7 Ways to Keep Your Purchased Email Accounts Secure

The moment you receive an email account, responsibility for it passes to you. The steps below keep the account secure and help it keep working for a long time without tripping the provider's security checks.

1. Change the password right away

Set a strong, unique password after delivery. Do not reuse the same password across accounts; a password manager makes this easy.

2. Update the recovery details

Replace the recovery email and phone number, if any, with your own. If the account ever gets locked, these details are the only way back in.

3. Turn on 2-Step Verification

2FA blocks access even if your password leaks. Store the backup codes you receive somewhere safe.

4. Space out your logins

Logging into many accounts in a row from the same IP triggers unusual-activity alerts at providers. If you work with bulk accounts, log in at intervals.

5. Go easy in the first days

Instead of heavy activity from day one, ramp up usage of a newly delivered account gradually.

6. Do not send unsolicited bulk email

Spam breaks both the law and provider rules, and it is the fastest way to get an account closed.

7. Sign in regularly

Google, Microsoft and Yahoo may close accounts left inactive for a long time. Sign in now and then even to accounts you are not using.
